"Art became more than creativity — it became therapy, expression, and freedom."
Ryhope Art and Craft Studio was founded by Gary and Jane Nicholson through lived experience, resilience, and a shared belief in the power of creativity, inclusion, and community support.
Gary's life changed in September 2009 after spinal surgery left him paraplegic. What followed was a long journey through depression, frustration, and isolation. During recovery, art became his path back to confidence and connection.
Through community art programmes and later studying illustration at the University of Sunderland, Gary discovered how creativity could help people process trauma and reconnect with themselves. Together with Jane, they founded Regeneration NE CIC with a clear mission:
To help people rebuild confidence, discover purpose, and connect with others through creativity and wellbeing.
